Introduction to the Practice

Medical science and technology made tremendous progress in the 20th and 21st centuries. Many diseases previously considered fatal are being successfully treated with powerful medications and surgery, thanks to the technological revolution.

Unfortunately, our medical system is not perfect. It is driven by a desire for a “quick fix” at all costs, to satisfy the demands of our business-oriented culture, where the value of a human being is expressed in dollars and cents. So, in medical schools, doctors are taught to diagnose and treat specific diseases based on standardized protocols, leaving no room for individualized care. Such care is always fragmented -- patients with chronic medical conditions are often being treated by multiple physicians of different specialties, who pay attention only to the "part" to be fixed and relieving symptoms, often without awareness of the root causes of these diseases.

This is one of the reasons why many chronic diseases such as eczema, arthritis, digestive problems, to name just a few, are difficult to treat. Conventional medicine often concentrates on suppressing the symptoms of the disease, with the primary goal of expedited return to work, but doesn't look at the patient as a whole, doesn't take into consideration personal history, living conditions, relationships, job, position in the community, nutrition, physical activity and other factors which can have a significant influence on the causes, the course of the disease, its treatment, and prognosis.

For example, it is common knowledge in the medical community that stress may cause stomach ulcers, but the current mechanistic assumption is that the disease "just happens" and must be "get rid of". Patients are just being prescribed drugs that suppress the secretion of acid in the stomach, which usually helps only partially and almost always temporarily unless the underlying problems are addressed.

Despite the great progress of medical science, there are millions of people suffering from chronic fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, hormonal imbalances, insomnia, depression, anxiety -- none of which are properly addressed, except with prescribed drugs to suppress the symptoms.
These symptoms are the signals sent by our bodies, manifesting underlying root causes of health problems. From the point of view of conventional medicine, it may not be obvious that the above symptoms may be caused by chronic stress, food triggers, gut imbalances, chronic infections, and toxins.

In our practice, we concentrate on finding the causes of diseases and on complete health restoration, activating self-repair mechanisms on every level. We use advanced special tests to diagnose the causes of health issues and create a specialized program, tailored to a unique individual. Such a program concentrates on nutraceuticals and lifestyle modifications to turn on the innate body's healing, restore health, boost energy, balance hormones, and lose extra weight. If appropriate and desirable, we may also use homeopathy -- a holistic, natural, safe system of medicine that stimulates the person's own healing power. In patients challenged by mental disorders such as anxiety, depression and Alzheimer's disease, the Walsh approach of targeted individualized nutrient therapy, aimed at correcting the chemical imbalances, altering brain levels of key neurotransmitters, may be offered.

Functional Medicine encourages a proactive approach to prevent future diseases and achieve optimal wellness. We are all different, both genetically and biochemically, and we exist in unique environments, which may promote health or lead to disease.
Our level of stress, our nutrition, physical activity, relationships with the world around us, and we ourselves influence gene expression and ultimately our health or disease.
We utilize personalized health care approaches for each patient, creating plans designed to reverse specific imbalances to prevent chronic conditions, ultimately leading to a long, healthy life.
